The quest for an instrument capable of producing a celestial sound led to the creation of the celesta. Invented in 1886 by Victor Mustel, a harmonium maker, this instrument is distinguished by its crystalline and ethereal tone. It was immortalized by Tchaikovsky in The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker ballet, where its unique timbre evokes magic and wonder.

Today, Schiedmayer is the only manufacturer that continues to produce celestas while preserving the original mechanisms and specifications set by Victor Mustel, ensuring unmatched quality and authenticity.

The celesta consists of several essential components:

The Keyboard: The celesta has a keyboard similar to that of a piano, with black and white keys covering 4 to 5 ½ octaves.

The Music Stand: It protects the keyboard when closed and also serves as a support for sheet music.

The Hammers and Metal Bars: The keys activate small felted hammers that strike metal bars, producing the characteristic sound of the celesta.

The Resonators: Made of wood, they amplify the sound of each struck bar and enhance the celestas resonance.

The Frame (or casing): This forms the body of the celesta and ensures its structural integrity.

The Pedal: Similar to a piano pedal, it plays a crucial role in sound resonance. When pressed, it allows the notes to sustain freely; when released, it dampens them immediately.

An Instrument with a Magical Sound

The celesta is often used to evoke water, light, mystery, and enchantment. Its airy and shimmering tone makes it a preferred instrument for dreamlike and fairy-tale compositions, whether in classical and contemporary music or in film soundtracks.
